Henry J Restoration - Step 1
Review Facilities

 Home || Step 2

The first step toward a successful restoration is to take a good honest look at your facilities.  Bill takes us through some of the important facility requirements for a successful restoration.  We really had to consider how much of the work we are doing ourselves and the kind of restoration we are attempting.

Our facility considerations for the restoration are itemized below:

Do you have an enclosed area in which you can work?

We do have a 24' by 40' workshop to do the restoration.  One corner of the shed has a wine cellar in it as one of our other hobbies is drinking and making a bit of wine.

Is our workshop large enough to hold the car and the parts being removed?

I believe so.  Available floor space is six times the size of the Henry J.  The ceiling is high so fenders and other large items can be stored off of the floor.

There are several large shelving units to store removed parts and the plan is to install some wire shelves to hang smaller parts in baggies.

Do we have all the tools we will need and well are they organized?

Wrenches - Two sets of wrenches, 1/4 - 3/8 - 1/2 sockets and a torque wrench.

Cherry Picker - Good friend Don Chamberlain is letting us store his cherry picker in our garage.

Do we have the equipment required?

We do have a medium sized air compressor.
Will need a bigger one to drive the media cabinet.
Probably a 5 hp unit.

How much of the painting are we going to do?

We do not intend to do the final painting but would like to do most of our own body work and priming.

How do you plan on lifting the body off of the frame?

We have several 6" by 14" beams.  The plan is to position the beams across an outside outside wall top and a wall of our wine room.  The beams will be positioned directly above the Henry J body pickup points.

Access to an abrasive blasting cabinet is absolute must.  What is the plan?

We are looking for a small cabinet, hoping our air compressor is large enough to do the job.  Probably a 5 Hp compressor will be required.

Do you plan on powder coating any of your parts prior to reassembly?

Purchased an old stove with two ovens.  The Shop is wired for 220 volts but will need to pull in conduit for a stove plug.

Powder Coating Equipment - Got a powder coating system for Christmas.  It's a Craftsman Model 17288.
